SEO (search engine optimization) is the work that helps your pages show up when people search on Google, Bing and, more and more, in AI assistants like ChatGPT. Done well, it brings you visitors who already need what you sell, without paying for each click. Here are the eight benefits that matter most for a business in 2026, with the numbers behind them and the limits you should know about.

The short answer

The main benefits of SEO are:

  1. You reach people who are already searching for what you offer.
  2. Your cost per lead goes down over time.
  3. Your results keep working when you pause your spending.
  4. Your business looks more credible and trustworthy.
  5. You show up on Google Maps and in “near me” searches.
  6. Your website gets faster and easier to use.
  7. Your Google Ads campaigns perform better.
  8. You give yourself a chance to be named in AI answers (ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews).

1. You reach people who are already looking for you

Most marketing interrupts people: a social media ad, a flyer, a radio spot. Search works the other way around. Someone types “emergency plumber Longueuil” or “CRM for a small manufacturer” because they have a need right now. SEO puts your page in front of that person at the exact moment they are making a decision.

That is why search remains one of the biggest sources of website traffic. In a BrightEdge study covering thousands of websites, organic search drove 53% of all trackable traffic, compared with 15% for paid search. The exact share varies by industry and has moved since, but the principle hasn’t: when people need something, they search for it.

2. Your cost per lead goes down over time

With Google Ads, every visit has a price, and the traffic stops the day the budget stops. SEO works more like an investment. You pay for the work up front (content, technical fixes, links from other sites), and a page that ranks keeps bringing visitors month after month, with no cost per click.

A quick example

A page brings 300 qualified visits a month on a keyword that costs $4 per click in Google Ads. Buying the same traffic would cost about $1,200 a month, or $14,400 a year, for that one page.

These figures are an illustration. Your cost per click depends on your industry, your region and your competitors.

3. Your results keep working when you pause

Ads disappear the moment you pause them. A strong page can rank for years. That makes SEO one of the few marketing assets that keeps its value after you stop paying for it.

It still needs upkeep. Competitors publish new pages, Google updates its algorithms and information goes out of date. Plan to review your key pages at least once a year. We rewrote this article in October 2026 for exactly that reason.

4. Your business looks more credible

People tend to trust the businesses that come up first in the regular (organic) results, because they know those positions can’t be bought. SEO also builds the proof buyers look for before they call: clear service pages, useful answers to their questions and good reviews. According to BrightLocal’s 2026 survey, 97% of consumers read reviews when choosing a local business.

Google rewards the same things. Its guidelines look for experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness, often shortened to E-E-A-T, and state that trust is the most important of the four. In practice: say who wrote the page, show what you know, and earn mentions from other credible sites.

5. You show up on Google Maps and in “near me” searches

For a business that serves a region, local SEO is often the fastest win. It covers:

  • your Google Business Profile (categories, hours, photos, services and posts);
  • your reviews, and your replies to them;
  • the same name, address and phone number everywhere your business is listed;
  • a page for each region or city you serve.

Done right, it puts you in the “map pack”, the three businesses Google shows on a map for searches like “accountant near me” or “roofer Brossard”. Google is still where most people check reviews (71% of consumers in the BrightLocal 2026 survey), even though that share is falling as AI assistants grow. More on that in benefit 8.

6. Your website gets faster and easier to use

Most SEO work also improves the experience for your visitors: faster pages, a site that works well on a phone, a clear structure and content that answers the question without making people dig for it. Google measures part of this with its Core Web Vitals, which track loading speed, responsiveness and visual stability.

Faster pages also convert better. On our own site, removing heavy scripts and compressing images in October 2026 cut the weight of our mobile home page from 4.3 MB to 1.1 MB. Visitors on a phone see the page sooner, and Google sees a faster site.

SEO and Google Ads work better together than apart.

  • Ads feed SEO. Campaigns quickly show which search terms bring calls and sales. SEO then turns the best ones into pages that rank for free.
  • SEO feeds ads. The landing pages you improve for SEO usually raise your Quality Score in Google Ads, which can lower your cost per click.
  • More space on the page. When you appear in both the ads and the organic results, you take up more of the screen and get more of the clicks.

8. You can be named in AI answers

This is the biggest change of the past two years. Google now shows AI Overviews above many results, and more people ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot directly. The effect on clicks is real:

  • 8% vs 15% When a Google AI summary appeared, users clicked a regular result in 8% of visits, compared with 15% without one (Pew Research Center, March 2025 data).
  • −58% In December 2025 data, the top-ranking page got 58% fewer clicks on average when an AI Overview was shown (Ahrefs, 300,000 keywords).
  • 45% of consumers now use ChatGPT or other AI tools for local recommendations, up from 6% a year earlier (BrightLocal, 2026).

So is SEO still worth it? Yes, because AI tools build their answers from the web. They draw on pages that are easy to crawl, clearly written, precise about the facts and mentioned by other trusted sites. That is SEO. Optimizing to be cited in AI answers is called GEO (generative engine optimization), and it starts from a solid SEO foundation. The goal simply widens: be the source the AI names, not only the link people click.

Benefits of SEO by type of business

Local service businesses

Contractors, clinics, law firms, accountants: most of your customers live within a few kilometres. Local SEO and your Google Business Profile bring calls and quote requests from people ready to hire. See how we approach construction and renovation and professional services.

Online stores

Product and category pages that rank bring sales with no ad cost per order, which matters when margins are thin. Good product content, clean site structure and fast pages make the difference, especially on Shopify. More on our e-commerce work.

B2B companies and manufacturers

Buyers research for weeks before they contact a supplier. Pages that answer their technical questions keep you on the shortlist, long before the first call. See our approach for manufacturers.

What SEO won’t do

  • It isn’t instant. In our experience, expect the first gains in 3 to 6 months, and 6 to 12 months on competitive keywords. If you need leads next week, Google Ads is the right tool.
  • Nobody can guarantee first place. Google says it plainly in its own advice on hiring an SEO: “No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.” Be wary of anyone who promises it.
  • It won’t fix a weak offer. SEO brings people to the page. Your offer, your prices and your follow-up close the sale.
  • Traffic is no longer the only measure. With AI answers, some searches end without a click. Judge SEO on calls, forms and sales, not only on visits.

Most of our clients use both: ads for speed, SEO for a lower cost per lead over time.

How to know if your SEO is working

  1. Google Search Console (free). Impressions, clicks and average position for each page and each search.
  2. Leads from organic search. Calls and form submissions tracked by source, for example with Google Analytics 4 and call tracking.
  3. Searches for your name. More people searching for your business by name is a sign your reputation is growing.
  4. Mentions in AI answers. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI Mode the questions your customers ask, and note whether your business is named.

Frequently asked questions

What are the benefits of SEO for a small business?

More qualified visitors without paying per click, a lower cost per lead over time, better visibility on Google Maps and more trust from potential customers. For a small business, local SEO and a complete Google Business Profile usually bring the fastest results.

How long does SEO take to work?

Usually 3 to 6 months for the first gains and 6 to 12 months on competitive keywords. Local SEO and improvements to pages that already rank can move faster.

Is SEO still worth it with ChatGPT and AI Overviews?

Yes. AI assistants build their answers from web pages that are well structured, accurate and trusted, which is exactly what good SEO produces. What changes is how you measure success: leads and mentions, not only clicks.

What is the difference between SEO and SEM?

SEO earns free positions in the organic results. SEM (search engine marketing) usually refers to paid search ads such as Google Ads, although some people use the term for both. The two work best together.

Should I do SEO myself or hire an agency?

You can handle the basics yourself: your Google Business Profile, your reviews and clear service pages. An agency becomes worth it when you compete for valuable keywords, when your site needs technical work, or when you don’t have time to publish regularly.
